If you think I’m a social artist like Justin Bieber or Paris Hilton, think again. I’m not even on Facebook. Many years ago, through personal research, I ran across the name Jean Houston who referred to herself as a social artist. With a personal history of writing and performing songs about social issues, I was intrigued to see what Jean Houston had to say.
Here is a taste of what Social Artistry is, lifted from an article by Jean Houston by the same name published in 2004 on the New Horizon website.
“The work of social artistry is evolving and open-ended, striving to provide a dynamic balance between inner understanding and outward expression. The social artist is one who brings the focus, perspective, skills, tireless dedication and fresh vision of the artist to the social arena.”
As a planetary citizen, “The social artist is trained to move comfortably between cultures, capable of understanding and honoring another’s belief systems, cultural styles, tribal and national stories and rituals.”
Further, “in order for one to move out of a static reality, one needs to see the bigger picture”
The social artist is “open to the fact that the membrane between cultures, between worlds, between old and new ways of being is breaking down.”
“The social artist can hear all the stories and divine the elements of the old which will be needed to help create the new.”
Therefore, I strive to use my skills and talents in such a way as to further a positive progress towards the future for all of creation.
